The private sector is increasingly recognised — including through global policy frameworks such as the Pact for the Future and the United Nations Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace Agenda—as an important actor in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development. Despite this recognition, the role of the private sector in peacebuilding remains under-explored. 

To advance knowledge and understanding on the role of diverse private-sector actors in advancing social cohesion, stability and peace, the Innovation Portfolio is IPYP's dedicated research and development (R&D) mechanism. The portfolio is designed to test and advance new ways of working with the private sector to better support youth-led peacebuilding. It brings together research, pilot projects, and partnership models that both mobilise new resources for youth-led peacebuilding and create value for companies seeking to align their CSR commitments with tangible peace and inclusion outcomes. The portfolio helps businesses and young changemakers work together on shared priorities, building evidence and momentum for systemic change in how peace and youth efforts are resourced and implemented.

While businesses and investors can play an important role in advancing peace and development, business activities can also contribute to tensions and inequalities if they are not conflict-sensitive or responsive to local contexts. IPYP's research and development arm therefore seeks to understand what is needed to ensure responsible engagement, with strong social and environmental standards, respect for human rights, and meaningful partnerships with local communities, including young people.
